Although the market is open 24 hours per day, it doesn’t mean that it is active.
You can break the forex market into four major trading sessions:
- Sydney Session
- Tokyo Session
- London Session
- New York Session
Open and close times are based on local business hours, with most business hours starting between 7-9 AM local time.
Open and close times vary during the months of October/November and March/April due to daylight savings time (DST).
The day of the month that a country shifts to/from DST also varies, which can be confusing. Japan doesn’t observe daylight savings, so you don’t have to worry about that one!

If you notice the Sydney Open, it has a two hour difference in the Eastern Timezone.
The reason is that when the U.S. adjusts for standard time, it shifts one hour back, and Sydney moves forward by one hour.
This is very important to know if you trade this session.
Trading Session Overlap
Between each forex trading session, there is a period of time where two sessions are open at the same time.
Market Volume
These overlapping times carry the highest trading volume due to two markets being open at the same time.
***Overlapping trading sessions = More money transferring hands***

In my next presentation, I will cover trading session overlap in more detail, along with the best times to trade and average pip movement.
Now let’s take a look at the average pip movement of the major currency pairs during each forex trading session.
